Regional Geology of the Northern Carnarvon Basin

The Northern Carnarvon Basin on Australia’s northwest margin covers an area of approximately 535 000 km2, predominantly offshore, in water depths of up to 4500 m (Figure 1). Two Mesozoic petroleum systems have been identified and numerous commercial oil and gas discoveries have been made within the basin. The basin is Australia’s premier hydrocarbon producing province and contains an established network of oil and gas production infrastructure (Figure 2).
